5 Tips to Reduce Clutter and Get Organized

 1.  Have a place for everything
  • If everything has it's place, it is pretty hard to lose anything once you learn where that place is.
  • Important papers get filled appropriately, like tax records, financial records, passports, birth certificates.
  • Keys, wallet, or purse go by the door.  No more mad scramble looking for them as you want to leave.
2.  Put Stuff away until you need it.
  •  Store items you use daily in easily accessible places. For example, pot holders by the stove, dish soap by the sink.
  • Less used items in less accessible places.  For example, Christmas decorations go in the crawl space or garage when not in use.
 3.  When you bring one thing home, try to send at least one similar item out the door.
  • Buy a new shirt?  Get rid of an old shirt.
  • Buy a new winter coat.  Give away old winter coat to charity
4.  Make purging a normal activity
  •  When cleaning an area purge as part of cleaning.  Don't simply more around things you don't use.  Get them out of your space.
  • Purge clothing at each change of season.  Purge before going clothing shopping so you know that you need.  It will also save you money and time by shopping with a purpose.
5.  Use Containers for like items
  • File box for files or filling cabinet
  • Binders for lose important papers
  • Even if you have lots of stuff, having it in containers or boxes make it look and feel more manageable.  But don't forget to label boxes so you know what is them.
  • Small items in a container is neater than a whole bunch of loose items.
